Name Numerology: How to Create and Understand Your Chart

Nine represents humanity.

Name numerology is a key component of the mathematically-based art of numerology. Learn how to make your own chart, which name to use, and what it will tell you.

Constructing the Name Numerology Chart

  • Attention to Detail: The chart in name numerology needs to be constructed very carefully with close attention to detail. This is because there is math involved, and while most of the math is relatively simple, making careless mistakes can mean arriving at the wrong number. This will completely undermine the entire chart.
  • Numbers Stay the Same: As you are constructing your chart, you'll find that you are well on the way to understanding numerology. The entire premise of numerology is that the name is coded into digits, and because numbers carry the same meaning no matter where they are found, you'll be able to interpret the context of the number with relative ease.
  • Single vs. Compound: In numerology, we work primarily with the single digits 1 through 9. The compound numbers are 11, 22, 33 and 44; these numbers are not reduced. Any digit larger than 9 that is not a compound number is reduced.
  • Correct Name Usage: When it comes to which name to use for the name numerology chart, use both the birth certificate name and the name currently being used (this is called the present signature). This is because the full birth name is the foundation of the chart and it will show how you came to use your present signature in the first place. Write out both names, and then fill in the blanks by referring to the chart below.

Number Corresponding Letters
1 A, J, S
2 B, K, T
3 C, L, U
4 D, M, V
5 E, N, W
6 F, O, X
7 G, P, Y
8 H, Q, Z
9 I, R

Now it's time to do the math. For example, if the name is Stacey Peterson, the math looks like this:

Stacey: 1+2+1+3+5+7= 19
Peterson: 7+5+2+5+9+1+6+5= 40

The next step is to add 19+40. This equals 59. All numbers in numerology are "broken down", so add 5+9 and the end result is 5 (1+4). This is the life path number for this particular name. Remember, if you arrive at 11, 22, 33, or 44, do not break the number down.

Understanding the Numbers

Now that we have determined the basic numbers in the chart, it's time to fill in the blanks.

Heart's Desire

First, assign each vowel its corresponding number ("Y" is considered a vowel if there is no other vowel in the name). Next, add the vowels (and only the vowels); first of each name separately and then reduce. Now, add all the names together and reduce to arrive at the final number.

Repeat this same procedure for the present signature. Once this is done, take comfort in knowing that you have arrived at your heart's desire number. This literally symbolizes what is at the very "heart" of your name and it represents where your heart lies, or where it feels the happiest.

Personality Number

To find the personality number, assign each consonant its appropriate number. From there, add the consonants of each name separately, reduce, and then add them all together. Reduce yet again.

Once these steps have been completed, you'll have the personality number. Note that the personality number is not an accurate description; it simply symbolized how you "appear" to the outside world.

Destiny Number

At this point, we are still treating the official birth name and the present signature as independent units. To arrive at the destiny number, add all the numbers of each name and reduce.

Next, add all three names (or as many as you have) together, and reduce. This final number is the destiny number, and it symbolizes "all" your past lifetime accomplishments as well as the energy patterns you are currently working with. In short, this number represents what you are here to do.

Putting It All Together

If the math was done correctly, you should have three numbers: the heart's desire, the personality and the destiny number. These three numbers serve as a great jumping off point for understanding your own personal name numerology. There are other numbers in numerology; including ones that deal with the birth date, planes of expression and attainment numbers. However, it is the name chart that represents the foundation of your life, so it behooves you to consider it carefully!
